The Vajont Dam is a foreign element to the natural landscape in which it is swallowed, its presence is traumatic and intrusive. In the perception of those that survived to the tragedy in 1963, the dam represents the scar that never completely healed with the place, with the landscape, with the man and his survival instinct.
Especially after the disaster, the landscape has changed its natural development, it’s tight by the perceived of the unassailable horizontal limitation. Its presence imposes a limit in the perception, which is also a limit to the memory like a freeze-frame, a blocked memory. The boundary between earth and sky is paradoxically hidden and concealing from the visual boundary of the dam.
The project rotates the horizon on the surface of the dam, the line is stretched vertically along the length of the cement wall, through a sequence of single weatherproof fluorescent fittings 5 ft. long. The line lights up at nightfall, making it extremely visible from sunset to dawn, when the dam grows dark.
The marked landscape redefines its natural motion, it tracks an ideal rift on the valley, it is an overturning on the perception and on the memory, issues relating to the human cognitive processing about the re-elaboration of any event.
Jerry A. Fodor, philosopher of the language and cognitive scientist, defines the structure of the mind as functional architecture, he assumes two different workings: on one side the horizontal faculties whose ambition to legitimise the popular mentalist practice and on the other side the vertical faculties that help us to manage in the social world.
Materials: 68 single weatherproof fluorescent fittings 5 ft.
Installation: it will be necessary a suspended anchoring for installing the light fittings with wall plugs.

–

The Vajont Dam will always be a silent witness, it’s however symbol of a catastrophe, symbol of the insane exploitation of the nature. After all we can propose to accept it, to insert it in the natural space and to make it more than a simple barrier. It can be a space of reflection.

An opening, wich reveals the landscape (img.1). This landscape is not behind or in front of the dam, is a new space, created and imagined inside the wall, inside us, below a line that is imaginary too, in place of the water. The wall moves and opens itself to the viewer, it’s a door. The mirror behind the door is symbolically a hole that crosses this untouchable wall. From the top of the dam it’s possible to see a part of the concrete wall coming out from inside the dam. At the beginning of the gangway and also from the path the mirror shows the sky (img.2). From the sides around the dam, depending on the position, there are different perspectives of the landscape reflected (img.3).

The piece of wall is made of armed cement, and it’s fixed to the dam’s surface. The mirror is also fixed and slightly inward, if possible. Therefore it’s necessary to create a thickness inward into the wall to install the mirror, probably it will be usefull to plane the surface at least 6 cm in depth.

The gangway-door (2m x 20m) is set at the bottom of the dam (about 10m from the ground), it has got parapets and leads the spectator in front of the huge mirror (img.4-5). The mirror (2m x 30m) climbs vertically along the wall and stops just in correspondence of the line. For safety reasons, the level of the gangway and the mirror, can be lowered.

If it wouldn’t be possible to realize a door, we propose another variation of the same project: the window (img.6-7). This option offers the spectator a discovering of the sculptural object from afar (wall 2,3m x 1m – mirror 2,3m x 2,3m).

–

Everything leaves a sign, visible or not.
The sign of the poison ivy that marks the surface on which it grows: the surprise to see it in its full red doesn’t fade.
Even the farthest event in the past, the Big Bang, maintains a perceivable residue of radiation.
Things happening afar reach us, making what has happened a long time ago visible to us, as happens with the stars and their light.
Past and present coexist, physically and psychologically; we relate to our past experiences to deal with the present.
Everyone of us carries along the signs of our own past.
The dam, a structural element, safeguards and limits the water it contains. The relationship that links the dam and the water is ascribed to the effect of the dam on the mass of water.
Instead, I wanted to underline the connection between the water and the dam, what water could give to the artificial structure, the meeting point.
The Sun, neutral element that shines on everything, indiscriminately, was however absorbed with different effects by the dam and by the water.
The dam absorbs light as a wall, while the water, as a lens, amplifies the luminous wave, reflecting and giving back light on the surrounding surface, refracting its wavelets on the dam’s wall, right above the “line”.
Heat and light are emanated in a way that unifies liquid wave and light wave, giving to the cement structure anaesthetic that, in that moment surpasses the element from which it had originated: the water basin.
In that moment the water and its reflection coexist, connecting present and future.
I’d like to replicate the effect of calling towards the future of the element that today isn’t present in the way that most surprised and gave emotion at the sight.

Site specific installation:
6 adjustable plexiglass tanks filled with water, lifted up from the ground through a scaffolding pipe structure, installed at the base of the friulian slope of the dam. At the edge of the tanks there will be an adjustable mirror sheet, to get the effect of reflection provoked by the sunlight hitting the water.

The tanks will function as a lens too, to amplify the luminous effect, while the height of the reflection will be changeable in-loco, as well as being able to mask the natural source of light from the Sun without touching the actual structure of the dam (by means of a “theatrical light” trick).

–

With this project, I would like to show the dam as an integral part of the landscape and that, as time goes on, the nature could get back what has been taken from it.
On the dam, the grass follows the sign left by waterflow becoming itself a vertical landscape.
On the one hand, the things written invite the viewer to think about the meaning of life, on the other hand the grass reminds of its fragility.
I adopted English as target language to bring the message to a broader dimension.
The words of the writing “I don’t know where when how” are on different levels (see picture) so they can break the curvilinear shape of the dam.
The materials are grass, ground and metal structures; the vertical wall made of grass can be provided by different companies.

–

The installation comes from a rough and severe context, given by the massive stillness of the dam and the unavoidable memory of the Vajont Tragedy. One of the feelings people have once he arrived in this area is that everything is static, motionless. This feeling combined with the silence surrounding the dam, inevitably lets the mind travel, linking this place only to the remembrance of the Tragedy.

The project aims to subvert this state of silence and inertia, livening up this place and this concrete monument by using water, symbol of life and flowing of time since ever.
The idea is to create a perpetual water flow, running along the dam’s wall, calm but uninterrupted, creating an affect of vitality and erasing the stillness of this huge concrete wall. The dam will than transformed into an interactive object, and will no longer be a great tombstone, but a living wall to touch, to dip a hand into it, to watch while pouring.

Technical specifications:
A pre-holed tube will be installed at the height of the “line” (level of the water on 9th October 1963), covering the entire length of the dam, hooked to the parapet on the dam’s crowning (no need for suspended construction site). With a simple circuit of pumps and vertical pipelines, the installation will reuse the same water, without environmental impacts.

–

Our project transforms the large cement wall of the dam in an ideal geological section. The splitted and revealed mountain shows its ancient secrets, as plausible as surreal, and it becames the narrator of a story that goes beyond man’s time. The line assumes the meaning of a timeline. The sedimenting lines that followed over time, age after age, keep the feedback of who and what lived them. In this way everything is related to a universal time, made of cycles, destructions, deaths and rebirths.

–

A neuma is an ancient musical notation.
In Music History the birth of the first forms of writing is a radical change in the perception of man. That was enough to trigger a process that will lead to the cultural primacy of the sense of sight out of the sense of hearing.
In this way conservation of memories will become more annotative than oral.
Starting from the meaning of rhythmic neuma, we propose a transliteration of the sculptural image. Instead of finding an expression in a continuous representation we create a rhythmic fragmented installation.
As the birth of neuma promotes more the sense of sight than the sense of hearing, the artwork does not arise as a finished object above the context, but the context becomes itself the subject.
the artworks we realize aim to create a relationship between time and space inside a piece of work.
The prisms in Corten steel, rhythmically arranged on the vertical wall, will be exposed in to open air and subjected to environmental weathering, making the dam an event that keeps evolving.
The installation, thanks to the process of transferring the color of Corten steel on concrete, will produce a completely autonomous color change on the dam surface.
So, what we propose is not a definitive picture but a new spatial configuration of the dam that will lead to an always different image.
The dialogue established between artwork, place and time is mediated by the substance that becomes, through its oxidation, creator of the ever evolving work image.

Technical Information:
The modules are made by an internal structure in steel, externally coated by Corten steel. Three dimensions: 10x5x1, 15x7x1, 20x10x1 meters, for a total of 34 modules. The area occupied on the surface is: 30 m max vertical; 100 m max horizontal and 5 m min from the top. For installation it is provided a suspended construction site and the transport of modules already assembled or to be assembled on site.

–

The Vajont valley has been frozen in time, for more than 50 years, like in a still image. Its dam, cement gravestone, reminds sad memories tied to the tragic event. A vicious circle from which it is difficult to escape. Is it possible to image a different scenario?

Our consideration rises from the water, the absent element recalled only by the thin sign left on the dyke’s surface. We want to re-establish its presence allegorically, through the use of floating elements at the height of water that was on the 9th of October, 1963. The perception of the liquid surface is due to the positioning of aerostatic balloons in the basin limited by the dam and the valley flancks. The idea of using balloons depends on their natural upward mobility when filled by helium and on the will of creating a positive, fantastic, extra-ordinary environment, almost playful. A place where actions of involvement of children and adults are fueled through the game, the discovery and the reappropriation of the area. In this way the actions go beyond the memory of the catastrophe, not rejecting the respect that it deserves, but creating occasions of exchange between the people, the dam and the environment.

Technical instructions:
The balloons, made of pvc, have eight anchor points tied with a rope that goes to the ground, where it is linked to a concrete basement buried underground, that acts as a counterweight element.
The balloons’ buoyancy is due to the helium they contain. They are waterproof and wind-resistant and, in case of damage, they can be easily fixed.

–

The work shows a double vision which change from day to night.
During daylight, people will be able to recognize a thin thread made of steel, colored in blue. This line, which goes form side to side of the dam wall, marks the level of height reached by the water the night of the disaster. The thread, which is positioned 1/1.5 m far form the wall, is hooked at two rings placed on the two opposite slopes.
A delicate sign that returns to the memory, not intrusive. It speaks softly, telling of a tragedy that shouts loud and noisy, making it difficult to say anything else.
The proposal of the installation aims to create a place for an active listening, a place aware of its own memories, a place that does not forget the past.

At night, then, when the darkness envelops the valley and only the edges of the elements are recognizable, the work will change its appearance. A camera placed on the external wall (west side) of the dam and a projector placed in front of the wall (east side), will film and duplicate the nightlight scene taking place down in the valley. The dam wall will be enlightened from a light cone able to rip up the wall and to allow to see what is happing beyond.
What is there beyond? There is the village of Longarone illuminated by the street light and by the light inside houses, bars, shops.
During night the work tries to remove the huge shape of the dam, reducing the pain of the tragedy and producing a better future made of integrity, justice, and hope.
Beyond the wall that obstruct the view, beyond the border that delimits the present.

–

The Vajont dam, is the most powerful and pervasive image that distinguish this place. Once the purpose of holding the free water’s flow has ran out, the dam still keeps the same purpose in a symbolic way, by blocking the flow of the present time towards the future, anchoring this valley in its painful past without leaving space to other powerful and communicative images and symbols. The aim is to interrupt this function the dam carried out since more than 50 years.

A river’s flow is projected on the dam below the “line”; the 20 meters of concrete wall above are still clearly visible. The image is projected making use of digital projectors.
The river’s flow is a live stream from a camera floating on the water’s surface, and sent to the projectors. The camera is arranged down by the Piave River, downstream, to which the Vajont River is a tributary. Projecting the Piave’s image on the dam creates a virtuous circle of energy; the work then becomes a driving force of valley’s regeneration, carrying out a function that was formerly done by the turbines, fed by the dam.

Casting a river’s water flow below this “line” creates also a second image, the upper side of the dam becomes a bridge: a bridge is an element full of meanings, the most important of them is to connect what is separate. Here, in this place, the meanings are amplified, the bridge joins what is crumbling to what is sturdy, the inhabited part to the deserted one, past to present and, most importantly, by being a bridge of all and for all, it will erase the biggest distance, the one from native-visited and foreign-visitors. By annulling “us” and “you” a new collective is created.

The work uses water, cement, energy and light, the same elements that characterized the dam and its product, but subverting their functions and meanings.
Bridge over troubled waters doesn’t mean to suggest neither a dichotomy between technology as negative and art as positive, nor to wipe the tragedy’s memory off (the dam won’t be altered, it will remain intact and visible in its physical and symbolic monumental nature).
The work tries “to build”, for the whole valley, a new meaning through a simple idea, but rich in memory and in new purposes.

–
