The word reMrite is a nonsense, is the misspelling, the blunder of a pupil, something due to carelessness, ignorance, laziness or simply to the fantasy of playing with letters.
ReMrite is the M-shaped fracture of the mountain on the opposite side of the valley, seen from the windows of the school, and the inverted W of “down with the school”.
ReMrite is the word that will appear on the facade of the nuovo spazio di casso before the exhibitions and conferences will take place, in the time span interposed between the non-use and the use of this space.

ReWrite, instead, is the word that will appear every time this space will liven up, it is the correction of a mistake, is a REWRITE, so rewriting this place with new words, it is the “M” of a tragedy, of a situation that can be overturned and addressed to new intentions, to a new change, is a “W (hooray) for school” and its reuse open to everyone.

The idea of this project is simply to overturn the letter “M”,  shape and engraving, the fracture that represents the Vajont Dam tragedy and, by doing this, to overturn the attitude and the way people deal with this terrible catastrophe, as when we were children attending school and with a simple gesture we could turn “M (down with) the school” into “W (hooray for) school”.

reMrite è un nonsense, è l’errore ortografico e lo sbaglio di un alunno, dovuto alla disattenzione, all’ignoranza, alla svogliatezza o magari solo alla fantasia di poter giocare con le lettere.
reMrite è la M di quella frattura che dalle finestre delle scuole elementari si vede sul monte sul versante opposto ed è la W capovolta di “abbasso la scuola”.
reMrite è la scritta che comparirà sulla facciata del nuovo spazio di casso nei momenti antecedenti alle mostre/eventi, in quel tempo semplicemente interposto tra l’inutilizzo e l’utilizzo di questo spazio.

reWrite è invece la parola che comparirà ogni volta che questo spazio riprenderà vita, è la correzione di uno sbaglio, è REWRITE, ossia riscrivere questo luogo con parole nuove, è la M di una tragedia, di una situazione che può venire ribaltata e “rivolta” verso nuove intenzioni, verso un nuovo cambiamento, è “W la scuola” ed il suo riutilizzo rivolto a tutti.

L’idea di questo progetto è semplicemente quella di capovolgere la M, forma, incisione, frattura che rappresenta la tragedia del Vajont e quindi di ribaltare l’atteggiamento e il modo di vivere questa tremenda catastrofe, come quando da bambini, frequentando la scuola, con un semplice gesto si poteva trasformare M la scuola in W la scuola.

The project aims to promote those who, despite the tragedy, have chosen to lead their lives in Casso, without a feeling of panic or desolation.
I asked fourteen different individuals, including the only child living there, to let me see their hands.
The face, just like the hands, is the part of us that represents us most. It is through them that we can recognize one’s social level – they are a window of one’s personality.
Although this is a simple portrait, by asking: “how they show their hands,” a multitude of expressions, truths, and different behaviours were revealed without considering gestures.
Through this process, my work as a portratist was enriched, as I wanted to render them “saints” even if they were very alive and transform them into true icons.

The photographic half-length portraits in B/W, realized in analog format 6×6 cm square, measure: 1,4×1,4 meters. The photos, printed on coated paper, have been encased in a sandwich of plexiglass and encircled by a blue neon light. These installations will be inserted in the 14 areas of the façade of the old school.

Il progetto vuole dar luce a coloro che, nonostante la sciagura terribile, hanno deciso di continuare la loro vita a Casso. A quattordici persone diverse, compreso l’unico bambino del paese, ho chiesto di mostrarmi le mani.
Il volto è la parte di noi che più ci rappresenta. Ed anche le mani, attraverso le quali è possibile risalire allo stato sociale di ciascuno, sanno riflettere la personalità degli uomini.
Pur trattandosi di un semplice ritratto, alla domanda: “come mostri le mani ?” si è aperto un mare di espressioni, verità, atteggiamenti differenti, senza mai che ciò comportasse una caduta nella gestualità.
Nel suo processo, il lavoro si è venuto arricchendo: si è scelto di, in un certo modo, “santificare” tali volti, volti di vivi e non di morti, tentando di trasformare questi mezzi busti in vere e proprie icone.

I ritratti a mezzo busto b/n, realizzati in formato quadrato 6X6, misurano mt 1,4X1,4. Stampati su carta politenata sono in un sandwich di plexi e circondati da una luce neon. Vanno inseriti nei 14 spazi della facciata della vecchia scuola.

There is a responsibility with which every human begin has to measured himself, at least once in a lifetime on this planet. And this responsibility can’t be disconnected from the consciousness that resides in all of us…

If the events of the world are able to modify some of our convictions and of our way of thinking and feeling, it implies/explains that we are in a constant osmosis between the inside and the outside of ourselves. The awareness of being in the world and of having a responsibility about it, may generate reflections immersed in depth that bring out our real consciousness. In front of it, it’s impossible to hold back. It makes us perceive the truth of the things around us and the reality of our interiority.

Using the mirror as a metaphor, reality between the self and the outside self, manifests itself without subterfuge and tips over. The reflecting element, belonged to collective imagination with determined symbolic aspects, is charged with a new value, placing (physically and ideally) in front of an apparently far reality: the image of the mountain in its grandeur, the greatness of the sky, the peace of the silence and the surrounding greenery, the sun, the people, are reflected in asymmetrical and irregular reflecting forms, placed in complicated furrows of a part of the world. Furrows recall to a memory to be preserved and respected, where the element considered as a “fracture”, is recomposed and healed through a careful dialog between the inside and the outside. At the same time, we can find us in front of and inside of a scenery, a picture, a thought, a memory, a fantasy, with infinite possibilities to change own perspectives, overturning concepts and beliefs. Not forgetting that every little reflecting part embodies the greatest vision. It’s possible to talk about an invitation to think of each of the possible forms, finally dictated by the knowledge of each of us.

Materials: mirror sheets (plexiglass is preferred) to be shaped, specific glue or other support for the support of individual pieces, by wall.
The installations is composed by many mirror parts, shaped and cut (laser?) tracing exact contours of the pieces of plaster missing from the facade of the space concerned.
It might be useful the technique of frottage to highlight, in a way closer to the real, the dimensions and the countless and detailed forms of the spaces without plaster.
Every template will have a lower margin compared to the real, to fit together perfectly  and to positioned it at the same level of the wall. Doing a mapping of the entire facade, it’s possible to define all the parts to shape on the reflective sheets. The wall holder will be removable, it will not damage the preexisting state of the facade and will be mass in security. Removed, the entire installation, or part of it, will can be reassembled on the wall, following the mapping done previously, to reproduce the exact sign carved into the facade on the exhibition space of Casso, keeping the memory.

C’è una responsabilità con la quale ogni essere umano è chiamato a misurarsi, almeno una volta nella vita, su questo pianeta. E questa responsabilità, non può essere scollegata dalla coscienza che risiede in ognuno di noi…

Se gli eventi del mondo circostante sono capaci di modificare alcune delle nostre convinzioni e del nostro modo di ragionare e di sentire, ciò implica/spiega il fatto che siamo in continua osmosi tra il dentro e il fuori di noi stessi. La consapevolezza dell’essere al mondo e di avere una responsabilità verso di esso, può generare riflessioni che si immergono in profondità tali da far emergere la nostra vera coscienza. Trovandosi di fronte ad essa, non è possibile tirarsi indietro. Questa ci fa percepire la realtà delle cose che ci circondano e la realtà della nostra interiorità.

Utilizzando lo specchio come metafora, la realtà tra il sé e il fuori dal sé, si manifesta senza sotterfugi e si ribalta. L’elemento specchiante, appartenente all’immaginario collettivo con determinati aspetti simbolici, si carica di un valore nuovo, ponendosi di fronte (sia fisicamente che idealmente) ad una realtà apparentemente lontana: l’immagine della montagna nella sua imponenza, la grandezza del cielo, la pace del silenzio e del verde circostante, il sole, gli abitanti, si riflettono nelle forme specchianti asimmetriche e irregolari, poste nei complessi solchi di una porzione di mondo. Solchi che rimandano ad una memoria da conservare e rispettare, dove l’elemento che si può considerare di “frattura”, viene ricomposto e rimarginato grazie ad un attento dialogo tra il dentro e il fuori. Possiamo trovarci di fronte e dentro, allo stesso tempo, di uno scenario, di un’immagine, di un pensiero, di un ricordo, di una fantasia, con infinite possibilità di modificare le proprie prospettive, ribaltando concetti e convinzioni. Senza dimenticare che, ogni piccola parte riflettente, racchiude in sé, la visione più grande.

Si può parlare di un invito al riflettere in ognuna delle forme possibili, dettate infine, dalla consapevolezza di ognuno di noi.

Materiali: lastre specchianti (è preferibile il plexiglass) da sagomare, collante specifico o altro supporto per il sostegno dei singoli pezzi, a parete.
L’installazione è composta da innumerevoli parti di specchio, sagomate e tagliate (laser?), ricalcando i precisi contorni delle parti di intonaco mancante della facciata dello spazio in questione. Potrebbe essere utile la tecnica del frottage per evidenziare, in maniera più vicina al reale, le dimensioni e le innumerevoli e particolareggiate forme degli spazi privi di intonaco. Ogni sagoma avrà un margine inferiore rispetto al reale, per incastrarsi alla perfezione e posizionarsi allo stesso livello della parete. Effettuando una mappatura dell’intera facciata, si potranno definire tutte le parti da sagomare sulle lastre riflettenti.
L’aggancio a parete sarà removibile, non danneggerà lo stato preesistente della facciata e sarà messa in sicurezza. Una volta rimossa, l’intera installazione, o parte di essa, potrà essere rimontata a parete, seguendo la mappatura effettuata precedentemente, per riprodurre la precisa traccia incisa nella facciata dello spazio espositivo di Casso, conservandone la memoria.

The operation on the elementary school of Casso‘s façade is a single word made out of neon light: VAJONT.
I believe that art, rather than adding meanings and tampering with the context, may, through a play on subtraction, give back their real significance to many things.
Big enough to be seen from a distance, VAJONT is a word to suggest that the history of that location isn’t limited to the most recent, tragic one.
VAJONT so the Valley may return to be lived as a precious place, and excellent naturalistic environment.
VAJONT because its history goes back millennia.
VAJONT because nature can become the reconciliatory element even in human mistakes.

L’intervento sulla parete della scuola elementare del paese di Casso è una parola sola di luce al neon: VAJONT.
Penso che l’arte più che aggiungere significati e manomettere il contesto può, attraverso un gioco di sottrazione, restituire il vero senso alle cose.
Abbastanza grande perché si possa leggere anche da una certa distanza VAJONT è una parola per suggerire che la storia di quel luogo non è soltanto la memoria tragica più recente.
VAJONT perché la Valle torni ad essere vissuta come luogo prezioso e ambiente naturalistico eccellente.
VAJONT perché la sua storia è storia millenaria.
VAJONT perché la natura può essere elemento di riconciliazione anche degli errori umani.

Our project originates from some drawings we commissioned to ours sons, Paolo and Leila of 6 and 5 years old.
Once magnified and installed on the wall, the two sketches become the bridge between past and future, creating a break and a sense of disorientation in the observer.
The two neon deers create an evident link with their location and the positive potential of rebirth, under the sign of the enchantment. An oniric vision that recalls the symbolic value of the deer.
The deer, symbol of fertility and continuous renewal of life, looks triumphantly at the M shaped scar on the mountain.

Il nostro progetto nasce da alcuni disegni che abbiamo commissionato ai nostri figli, Paolo e Leila di 6 e 5 anni.
Una volta ingranditi e installati sulla parete della scuola, i due schizzi diventano un ponte tra passato e futuro, disorientando l’osservatore e al tempo stesso suscitando un momento di riflessione.
Il legame tra il disegno dei cervi e la loro posizione simboleggia il potenziale positivo della rinascita, sotto il segno dell’incanto e del surreale.
Come in una visione onirica quindi, i due cervi, simbolo di fertilità e rinnovamento continuo della vita, sembrano guardare trionfalmente la cicatrice a forma di M provocata dalla frana.

It is a history of traces and memories.
Until today only gray, a color that crystallizes, blocks.
Many children, so many imprints.
They will fade over time, as an imprint that disappears.

The wall is now the visual memory of what happened yesterday.
That day has left scars on the facade; scars that will change with the flowing of time and by the action of rain and wind .

With this action I want to give a new look to these signs through light and color, now missing. The intent is to create a mapping, to trace the wall, thus obtaining the imprints reminiscent of the past and preserving the real tracks.
Using neon is therefore seeking to emphasize the variety of colors that used to liven up the school.
At the end of the installation’s period the neons will retain their meaning of testimonies, without losing relevance once unhooked from the wall: the school is the territorial boundary of Casso, and the imprints will in the future go beyond.

È una storia di tracce e ricordi.
Fino ad oggi il grigio, unico colore che cristallizza, blocca.
Tanti bambini, tante impronte.
Svaniranno nel tempo, come un’impronta che si cancella.

Il muro oggi è la memoria visiva di quanto accaduto ieri.
Quel giorno ha lasciato delle cicatrici sulla facciata; cicatrici che sono oggetto di modifiche per lo scorre del tempo e per l’azione di pioggia e vento.

Con tale azione si vuole dare una nuova veste a questi segni tramite la luce e i colori che ora mancano.
L’intento è di creare una mappatura, tracciare il muro, ottenendo così le impronte memori del passato e conservandone i calchi reali.
Tramite il neon si cerca quindi di sottolineare la molteplicità di colori che animavano la scuola.
Al termine del periodo di installazione i neon manterranno il loro significato di testimonianza, senza perdere rilevanza una volta sganciati dal muro: la scuola rappresenta il limite territoriale di Casso, e le impronte potranno in futuro andare oltre.

The project starts from a reflection about the light, symbolized from the material with which the project will be developed: the neon, a light source but also a malleable material. The immateriality of the light and the physicality of the material, become a metaphor of the artistic process based on duality between rationality and uncounscious, intuition and method, convergence and divergence.
Optical phenomena arise from the interaction between material and light, as a result of peculiar atmospheric conditions, like rainbows, the green ray or Morgana fairy. Some events, like optical illusions, are provoked from human eyes, as erroneous interpretations of messages that derives from reality.
Enrosadira is a peculiar optical event specific of Dolomiti peaks, that mirror the sun light, above all during the sunrise and the sunset, when the peaks turn pink, because of their mineral composition, the dolomia (made of calcium carbonate and magnesium).

For the facade of Casso headquarter we assume an installation with two triangles, each composed by three neon (pink, orange and yellow, the colors involved in the phenomenon of the enrosadira), which recreate the figure of the Penrose triangle. The Penrose triangle is an impossible construction, which can only exist in two dimensional space, because it recreates the three dimensional optical effect of a triangle, which sides could not correspond, because they are formed by lines made by different perspective constructions. The triangle, a geometric shape that stands between the circle and the square, symbolizes an intermediate entity between the abstract and the matter that is perceived by our senses. It is could also be referred to the prism shape from which the ray of light is divided into its spectral components, but it could also be the icon of the mountain.
This project would create a connection between the specific place where it should be installed and its medium. The light of the neon becomes the echo, even if soft, of the natural light that shines upon Dolomiti, turning into matter.

Each triangle is composed by six shaped angle neon (of 60 degrees) and will measure 0.7 m (base) and 0.6 m (oblique side) approx. The neon will be colored in pink, orange and yellow, and they will have a diameter of 2.5 cm.

Il progetto parte da una riflessione sulla luce, simboleggiata dal materiale con cui il progetto dovrà essere sviluppato: il neon, fonte di luce ma anche materiale malleabile. L’immaterialità della luce e la fisicità della materia, diventano una metafora del processo artistico fondato sulla dualità tra raziocinio e inconscio, intuizione e metodo, convergenza e divergenza.
Proprio dall’interazione tra materia e luce, nascono i fenomeni ottici, risultato di particolari condizioni atmosferiche, come l’arcobaleno, il raggio verde o la fata Morgana. Alcuni fenomeni sono generati dallo stesso occhio umano, come le illusioni ottiche, interpretazioni errate di messaggi provenienti dalla realtà.
L’ enrosadira è un particolare fenomeno ottico che interessa le cime delle Dolomiti, che per la loro composizione mineraria, la dolomia (contenente un composto di carbonato di calcio e magnesio), riflettono in modo peculiare la luce solare, soprattutto all’alba e al tramonto, quando le rocce si accendono di un rosa intenso.

Sulla facciata dello spazio di Casso, si ipotizza l’installazione di due triangoli composti ciascuno da tre neon di colore rosa, giallo e arancione (i colori coinvolti nel fenomeno dell’enrosadira), che ricreano la figura del triangolo di Penrose. Il triangolo di Penrose è una costruzione impossibile, che può esistere solo nello spazio bidimensionale, poiché ricrea l’effetto ottico di un triangolo tridimensionale, i cui lati non riescono a coincidere poiché formati da linee con differenti costruzioni prospettiche. Il triangolo, figura geometrica che si pone tra il cerchio e il quadrato, rappresenta un’entità intermedia tra la sostanza astratta e la materia che ricade sotto i nostri sensi. Può essere inoltre riferito alla forma del prisma da cui il raggio di luce si divide nelle sue componenti spettrali, ma anche all’icona stilizzata della montagna.
Questo progetto si propone di creare una connessione tra il luogo specifico in cui dovrebbe essere installato e il medium utilizzato. La luce creata dal neon diventa un’eco, seppur lieve, della luce naturale che irradia le Dolomiti, tramutandosi essa stessa in materia.

Ciascun triangolo sarà composto da sei neon dalla forma angolare (60 gradi) e misureranno 0,7 m (base) e 0,6 m (lato obliquo) circa. I neon saranno colorati di rosa, arancione e giallo, e avranno un diametro di 2,5 cm.

“When the pain is absent we may be afraid to try it, when the pain is bearable, we can be afraid to try it more intensive, when the pain is the maximum we are no more afraid of anything, and even the mystery of death can stand on the threshold of pain, to be able to still scare us. “

History will not forget, there will always be a day to cry, but that day is not today. From this observation, the work No Vacancy is a beacon of hope in the darkness of tragedy: it’s a neon installation on the roof of the Nuovo Spazio di Casso.

The purpose of this project is the same that art itself, that is, being able to connect distant and different realities. The only way to do this, is to be always open to innovations, just like the devastated Vajont area now, but without forgetting the past.
The idea of the sign is inspired by the old signs of Motels in the ’50s, but with an important difference: while the word “Vacancy” will always remain switched on to indicate the openness of welcoming people, ideas and proposals, the word “No” even if it’s part of the sign, will always remain off, as a reminder of the past events, but with the knowledge that the worst is over.
The sign, will be high about 1 / 1.5 m and long 10 m and will be positioned on the roof of the building, on the right, so it will have a greater visibility. The neon color will be white, and the word will be printed in capital letters, in a sans serif font to be defined.

“Quando il dolore è assente possiamo temere di provarlo, quando il dolore è sopportabile possiamo temere di provarne di più, quando il dolore è massimo non abbiamo più paura di niente, e nemmeno il mistero della morte può resistere alla soglia della sofferenza, per poterci ancora spaventare.”

La storia non si dimentica, ci sarà sempre un giorno per piangere, ma quel giorno non è oggi. Partendo da questa riflessione, il lavoro “No Vacancy” è un faro di speranza nel buio della tragedia: un’installazione al neon posizionata sul tetto del nuovo spazio espositivo di Casso.

Scopo di questo progetto è lo stesso che ha l’arte stessa, cioè quello di riuscire a mettere in contatto realtà molto distanti e diverse tra loro. Per far questo, l’unico modo è dimostrarsi sempre aperti e disponibili alle novità, esattamente come vuole fare la zona devastata del Vajont, ma senza dimenticare gli accaduti trascorsi. Di qui, l’idea dell’insegna, ispirata alle vecchie insegne dei Motel anni 50, ma con una sostanziale differenza: mentre la parola “Vacancy” rimarrà sempre accesa ad indicare la disponibilità di accoglienza di persone, idee e proposte, la parola “No” pur facendo parte dell’insegna, rimarrà sempre spenta, a monito degli eventi accaduti, ma con la consapevolezza di aver superato il peggio.
L’insegna sarà alta circa 1/1,5 m e lunga 10 m e sarà posizionata sul tetto dell’edificio, indicativamente sulla destra in modo che abbia maggior visibilità. Il colore del neon sarà bianco, mentre la scritta sarà in stampato maiuscolo, di un font bastoni da definire.

Beyond any rhetoric, the Vajont tragedy is primarily the tragedy of the families who have lived it.
Our proposal, through the insertion of a luminous element that draws a typical domestic shape, on one hand wants to pay a tribute to the memory of the families broken by the event, on the other it recalls the role of the Nuovo Spazio di Casso as a collective place able to build a new identity, going beyond the proper act of remembrance, a new home for the local community.

The project consists in drawing with the light a shutter that opens and closes the window located above the entrance door of the building. The “movement” of the shutter may have a relationship with the activities carried out inside, acting as a signaling and informative element.

Specifications: by the dimensions derived from the drawing we assume that for the realization of the project about 30 m of neon tube are needed, half of which directly anchored to the wall and the other half (in front of the window) on a metallic frame.

La tragedia del Vajont, aldilà di qualunque retorica, è soprattutto la tragedia delle famiglie che l’hanno vissuta.
La nostra proposta, attraverso l’inserimento di un elemento luminoso che richiama una forma tipicamente domestica, vuole da un lato rendere omaggio alla memoria delle famiglie spezzate dall’evento, dall’altro richiamare il ruolo del Nuovo Spazio di Casso come luogo collettivo costruttore di una nuova identità, in grado di andare oltre l’atto doveroso del ricordo, una nuova casa per la comunità locale.

Il progetto consiste nel disegnare con la luce una persiana che si apre e si chiude sulla finestra posta sopra la porta di ingresso dell’edificio. Il “movimento” della persiana potrà avere una relazione con le attività svolte all’interno fungendo quindi anche come elemento segnaletico e informativo.

Specifiche tecniche: dalle misure desunte dal disegno ipotizziamo che per la realizzazione del progetto siano necessari circa 30 m di tubo, di cui metà ancorato direttamente a parete e l’altra metà (antistante l’apertura) su un telaio metallico di supporto.

“Dans mon souvenir, l’école primaire que je fréquentais était très grande”

We tend to live small, intense and temporary manifestations of community when we experience grief. We hug each other with compassion. No tragic place should need elements (objects, photographs, art pieces) to be linked to its memory. The place should suffice, with its tragedy stuck on itself. Silence should be enough. Instead, we feel the need (or maybe the desire) for something to point at us and call us guilty, something that can expose us and close us in a heart-felt condolence.

The tragedy that we perceive as ours, repeats itself in other shapes, even today, but just a little bit farther from us. This one does not belong to us as much; it is closer because it is happening now, but at the same time, it is farther away because it is happening on the other side of the world. In order to make a work of art “useful”, it has to penetrate us, it must walk with us, it must help us reflect with any possible means, whether with a gunshot or a caress. It has to yell at us “leave and create our own thought”, maybe using the work itself as the starting point.

SOUVENIR is a fetish writing, just like the objects that often remind us of fetish and temporary memory, whether tragic or joyful.
A monument dedicated to memory, but, more importantly, a monument to the present. Dedicated to the deceased and to the living.

“Dans mon souvenir, l’école primaire que je fréquentais était très grande”

Siamo portati a vivere piccole, intense e temporanee manifestazioni di aggregazione nel dolore, stringendoci l’un l’altro in un abbraccio di compassione.

Nessun luogo tragico dovrebbe aver bisogno di elementi (oggetti, foto, opere d’arte) che lo colleghino alla sua memoria. Basterebbe il luogo stesso, con tutta la sua tragedia appiccicata addosso. Basterebbe il silenzio. L’uomo sente, invece, il bisogno (forse il desiderio) che qualcosa lo indichi, lo renda colpevole, lo smascheri, che lo chiuda in una “sentita” condoglianza.

Quella tragedia che sentiamo nostra è una tragedia che si ripete in altre forme, anche oggi, ma solo un po’ più in là, lontana da noi. Questa ci appartiene meno; è più vicina perché contemporanea, ma, allo stesso modo, molto più lontana, perché dall’altra parte del mondo. Per rendere davvero “utile” un’opera d’arte, forse c’è bisogno che ci penetri, che ci accompagni, che ci faccia riflettere, con uno sparo o con una carezza, non è importante. C’è bisogno che ci urli di andarcene, di creare un nostro pensiero, magari partendo proprio da lì.

SOUVENIR è una scritta feticcio, come sono feticci gli oggetti che spesso ci ricollegano ad una memoria anch’essa feticcio e temporanea (tragica o gioiosa, non importa). Un monumento alla memoria, ma, più importante, un monumento al presente. Dedicato ai morti e dedicato ai vivi.
