The Vajont creek used to flow along the valley where there is now a 270 millions cubic meter of landslide fallen from the Monte Toc. The original purpose of the dam was to be a provision of water, but as consequence water is not flowing anymore (it is currently deviated in an underground tunnel) depriving the valley and the inhabitants of its sound. The surrounding landscape is eloquent about how the myth of progress encountered here the limits that nature sets in reality. The fascinating and disturbing concrete wall reminds consistently and constantly what has happened, without mercy. It is not just a symbol; it is history itself, bringing into question how to legitimate a direct intervention on it.

Walking on the landslide, it is possible to have a frontal view of the dam, and it is specifically here that the project “Invisible cinema” invites the audience to stop on a circular platform, which achieves the same altitude as the one where the lake was on October the 9th, 1963. Two metal cylinder elements play a virtual sound of flowing water. The sound is recorded at the source and along the Vajont creek, giving back this sign to the sonicscape of the valley. The platform is 45 cm high and this position allows the audience to be in a peculiar viewing and hearing point in the middle of the soundstage where the third channel appears. The ancestral sound of water connects the past with the present. The concrete wall of the dam becomes a surface to project thoughts, a virtual display that tells us something about the relationship between Man and Nature.

Il torrente Vajont scorreva dove ora risiede un mucchio di circa 270 milioni di metri cubi di terra franata dal monte Toc. La diga nasce come banca d’acqua ma questa opera ingegneristica ha fatto in modo che l’acqua in valle non scorra più (ora passa in un canale sotterraneo) privando la valle e i suoi abitanti del suo suono. Il mito del progresso qui si riflette nel paesaggio e ci parla dei limiti fisici che la natura pone. L’inquietante e sinuoso muro di cemento restituisce i fatti senza pietà. Essendo storia, mette in discussione la legittimità di un intervento diretto su di essa.

La diga è ben visibile da uno spiazzo accessibile a piedi sulla frana di fronte. E’ in questo punto che invitiamo lo spettatore a fermarsi su una piattaforma circolare, posta alla stessa quota in cui si trovava il lago il 9 ottobre 1963. Due colonne di metallo emettono il suono dell’acqua che scorre, registrato alla sorgente e lungo il torrente Vajont, restituendo il segno che è stato rubato al paesaggio sonoro della valle. Sollevata leggermente dal suolo (circa 45 cm) la piattaforma pone il visitatore in una condizione di percezione alterata, al centro dei due canali audio che formano un terzo canale di fronte (stereofonia). Il passato e il presente s’incontrano nel suono ancestrale dell’acqua e il muro di cemento si fa superficie per la proiezione di pensieri, un display virtuale che narra qualcosa del rapporto tra la natura e l’uomo.
